Save Poe Co

Hello, We are creating a video montage (or "Tribute") for Poe Cooperative Nursery School in order to share our appreciation for this school with key decision makers.

It will only take you a minute to film and submit your video. Feel free to send a photo of a Poe Co memory/a letter written by your child to carolineewingwalker@gmail.com. It should make for a powerful message that shares our collective love and appreciation for Poe Co.

WHY?

We received notice from HISD that it will no longer allow private preschools to be housed on their campuses after this school year. This means a potential shutdown of our longstanding preschool Poe Cooperative Nursery School.

We want to make our voices heard and find some common ground. We are hoping with your support, we can find a way for Poe Co to stay onsite at Poe Elementary by way of temporary buildings or other solutions.

It's fitting that this will require a grassroots effort because that's exactly where the origins of Poe Co lie. Poe Elementary was experiencing a significant downturn of enrollment in the early 1970s, and the superintendent suggested to a group of parents that they start a preschool that would feed into Poe. With the help of the Poe principal and PTO, the Beehive Cooperative, and the University of Houston Nursery Lab School, Poe Co was a success from the beginning and was often credited as what turned Poe around. Perhaps our model of developmentally appropriate education and parent involvement will inspire HISD to allow us to set the example for other schools to follow.
